Overview

Buy English willow cricket bats direct from the manufacturer

Ciel Sports makes nine English willow cricket bats, from the ₹7,999 Surge to the ₹59,999 Reserve Edition. All nine are cut from Salix alba caerulea clefts, hydraulically pressed through eight separate stages, hand-shaped by our bat makers in Meerut, fitted with a Sarawak cane handle and covered by a 12-month handle warranty.

The single most useful thing to understand about this range is that grade describes the willow, not the workmanship. A Surge and a Reserve Edition are built to an identical standard by the same craftsmen using the same process. What separates them is the cleft: how mature the timber was, how straight and tightly spaced the grains run, and how clean the face came out of the press.

We are a manufacturer rather than a retailer, and we sell direct to the player. A bat leaving a Meerut factory normally passes through a distributor, a wholesaler and a retailer before it reaches a cricketer, and each takes a margin. We removed all three — which is why a hand-made English willow bat with eight press stages can start under ₹10,000. Meerut produces the large majority of the world's cricket bats. Buying here is buying at the source.

Explained by the people who grade it

English willow grades, honestly explained

There is no independent body that certifies English willow grades. Every manufacturer grades its own clefts, which is why a "Grade 1" from one brand can look nothing like a "Grade 1" from another. This is our standard, applied by our own bat makers.

GradeGrainsWhat the grader is looking atOur bat
Entry Level4–5Structurally sound cleft with visible natural character — specks, colour variation, butterfly stain. Younger timber.Surge
Development5–7More mature cleft, fewer blemishes, straighter through the blade.Torrent
Club5–7Selected on grain straightness and evenness rather than count. Grains run cleanly toe to shoulder.Vortex
Grade 16–7Straight grains, clean evenly coloured face, and critically — no grain run-out at the edges.Striker · Inferno
Grade 1+7–9All of the above plus tighter grain spacing and a face where blemishes are the exception.Dominator
Grade 1+ Limited8–10Exceptional clefts pulled from a shipment. Limited run — the timber decides supply, not us.Apex Limited
Player Grade8–12The clefts we would give a professional. Tight, straight, uniform grain on a near-flawless face.Titan Pro
Ultra Premium9–15Set aside before anything else is graded. Nothing on the face at all.Reserve Edition

Three things grading does not tell you

1. Grade is not build quality. Every bat here goes through the same eight hydraulic press stages, the same hand-shaping, the same Sarawak cane handle and the same 12-month warranty. Only the cleft differs.

2. More grains is not automatically better. Grains record growing seasons, so a high count means older timber — but a straight-grained six-grain cleft outperforms a wandering ten-grain one every time. Straightness beats count.

3. A flawless face can be a warning sign. Genuine English willow carries natural character. A face with no marks whatsoever has often been cosmetically treated — and treatment hides information you would want before buying.

Our full guide to English willow grades goes deeper, and whether Grade 1 is worth it makes the honest case both ways.

English willow cricket bat size guide

Pick by height, not by age. Between two sizes? Take the smaller one — bat control matters more than reach. Seven sizes across most of the range; the Inferno and Apex Limited are adult sizes only because of their 1220g minimum weight.

Choose your sweet spot

Five player profiles — on seven of our nine bats

Sweet spot position changes where the mass sits in the blade, which changes how the bat picks up and which shots come naturally. The Inferno and Apex Limited are the exceptions — both are built in one fixed full profile, because that geometry is the point of those bats.

Why buy an English willow bat from Ciel Sports

I

Eight hydraulic press stages, on every bat at every price

Pressing compresses the surface fibres of the willow into a harder, more responsive skin. Most bats are pressed two to four times, because pressing takes time and time costs money. Every bat in this range passes through eight separate hydraulic stages with pressure raised progressively across face, edges and toe. That is why our bats arrive closer to match-ready than most, and why the ping holds through a season. It is the one thing we refuse to cut, on a ₹7,999 Surge as much as a ₹59,999 Reserve.

8Press stages
II

Every cleft inspected by hand before it becomes a bat

Clefts arrive pre-graded, but grading happens in bulk and it misses things. Before a cleft is pressed, one of our bat makers checks it individually for grain run-out, internal cracks, soft patches and toe integrity. Clefts that fail are rejected outright rather than quietly downgraded into the entry range. Our entry-grade bats carry cosmetic character — they are never compromised clefts.

Factory direct — you pay for willow and labour, nothing else

A bat leaving a Meerut factory usually passes through a distributor, a wholesaler and a retailer before it reaches a player, and each one adds margin. We removed all three. Meerut makes the large majority of the world's cricket bats — the bats on this page are simply bought at the source rather than at the end of the chain.

Questions players ask

English willow cricket bats — frequently asked questions

What is the price of an English willow cricket bat at Ciel Sports? +

Our English willow cricket bats run from Rs 7,999 for the entry-level Surge to Rs 59,999 for the ultra premium Reserve Edition. The full range is Surge Rs 7,999, Torrent Rs 12,999, Vortex Rs 16,999, Striker Rs 20,999, Inferno Rs 23,999, Dominator Rs 36,999, Apex Limited Rs 42,999, Titan Pro Rs 49,999 and Reserve Edition Rs 59,999. Because we manufacture in Meerut and sell direct to the player there is no distributor, wholesaler or retailer margin in any of these prices.

Which English willow cricket bat should I buy? +

It depends on the cricket you play rather than the budget you have. For a first English willow bat, the Surge at Rs 7,999. For regular club cricket, the Vortex at Rs 16,999. For league or representative cricket, the Striker at Rs 20,999 in Grade 1 or the Dominator at Rs 36,999 in Grade 1+. If your role is specifically power hitting, the Inferno at Rs 23,999 has 42mm plus edges and no concaving. The Titan Pro at Rs 49,999 is our best all-round bat and the Reserve Edition at Rs 59,999 is the finest we make.

What is the difference between the English willow grades? +

Grade describes the cleft, not the workmanship. Every bat we make goes through the same 8-stage hydraulic pressing, uses the same Sarawak cane handle and carries the same 12-month handle warranty. Moving up the range buys you more mature timber with straighter, tighter and more uniform grain on a cleaner face. Entry Level carries 4 to 5 grains, Grade 1 carries 6 to 7, Grade 1+ carries 7 to 9, Player Grade carries 8 to 12 and Ultra Premium carries 9 to 15.

Do more grains mean a better English willow cricket bat? +

Not on their own. Grains record growing seasons, so a higher count means older and denser timber, but a straight-grained seven grain cleft will outperform a wandering twelve grain one every time. Straightness, the absence of grain run-out at the edges, and the pressing all matter more than the number you can count on the face. That is why we grade on straightness first rather than on grain count.

Are Ciel Sports English willow bats genuine English willow? +

Yes. Every bat in this range is cut from Salix alba caerulea clefts, the willow species grown for cricket bats. That is true of our Rs 7,999 Surge as much as our Rs 59,999 Reserve Edition. The difference between them is the grade of the cleft, not the species of the timber. Kashmir willow is a different species and we sell that as a separate range, clearly labelled.

How long does an English willow cricket bat need to be knocked in? +

Between 6 and 12 hours of mallet work depending on the bat, spread across two to four weeks, followed by throw-downs with an old leather ball. Our lower grades need 6 to 8 hours, the big-profile Inferno and Apex Limited need 8 to 10, and the Reserve Edition needs 10 to 12 because the timber is denser. All our bats go through 8 hydraulic press stages before they ship, so your knocking in is final conditioning rather than the whole job.

Do you ship English willow cricket bats internationally? +

Yes. Ciel Sports ships to more than 50 countries including the UK, Australia, USA, UAE, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa. Shipping within India is free. International shipping is calculated at checkout and typical delivery is 8 to 14 days. More than 80,000 cricketers across 50 countries have bought from us. For international or team orders, message us on WhatsApp at +91 95481 82993.

Can I customise my English willow cricket bat? +

Yes. Every bat is built to order. On seven of our nine bats you choose the sweet spot position from five player profiles, the bat size from seven, and the handle shape from round, oval or semi-oval, and you can note a weight preference so we hand-pick a matching cleft. The Inferno and Apex Limited are built in one fixed full profile because that geometry is the purpose of those bats. Custom orders are handled personally by our founders on WhatsApp.

What sizes do your English willow cricket bats come in? +

Seven sizes across most of the range: Size 5, Size 6, Harrow, Short Handle, Long Blade, Long Handle and Long Blade Long Handle, covering players from roughly age 9 through to tall adults. The Inferno and Apex Limited are offered in five adult sizes only, because their 1220g minimum weight is unsuitable for junior players. Choose by height rather than age, and if you are between two sizes take the smaller one.

What is 8-stage hydraulic pressing? +

Pressing compresses the surface fibres of the willow into a harder, more responsive skin. Most bats are pressed two to four times because pressing takes time and time costs money. Every Ciel Sports bat passes through eight separate hydraulic press stages with pressure raised progressively across the face, edges and toe. That is why our bats arrive closer to match ready than most and why the ping holds through a full season. It is the one thing we do not cut at any price point.

Why are Ciel Sports English willow bats cheaper than retail brands? +

Because there is no retail chain in the price. A bat leaving a Meerut factory normally passes through a distributor, a wholesaler and a retailer before it reaches a player, and each one adds margin. We manufacture in Meerut and ship direct to the player, so you pay for willow and craftsmanship rather than for three layers of distribution. Meerut makes the large majority of the world's cricket bats, so buying from us is buying at the source.

Should I buy English willow or Kashmir willow? +

Buy English willow if you play leather ball cricket regularly and want the rebound and pickup that English willow gives. Buy Kashmir willow if you mostly play tennis ball cricket, play leather ball only occasionally, or the bat will take heavy use on matting and concrete. Kashmir willow is denser and far more forgiving of abuse. English willow rebounds better and takes less effort to hit the ball to the boundary, but it demands proper preparation and care.
