Overview

Buy Kashmir willow cricket bats direct from the manufacturer

Ciel Sports makes four Kashmir willow leather ball bats in our own workshop in Meerut, the city that produces the large majority of the world's cricket bats. They run from ₹4,499 to ₹5,999, and the differences between them are smaller than the names suggest.

Across all four the build is identical. Eight hydraulic press stages, a multi-piece Singapore cane handle, a 34g premium rubber grip, a professional toe guard pre-fitted, a 12-month handle warranty, and free customisation including laser engraving. What changes as you move up is the grade of the cleft — and that is the only thing worth paying for.

Kashmir willow is denser than English willow and far more forgiving of hard grounds and heavy use. On rough club pitches it frequently outlasts an English willow bat costing twice as much. It does not rebound quite as freely, which is the honest trade — and if rebound matters more to you than durability, our English willow range starts at ₹7,999.

The straight answer first

Kashmir willow or English willow?

We make both, and we would rather point you at the right one than the expensive one. This is the decision that matters most, and it comes before choosing which Kashmir bat.

Buy Kashmir willow if

  • You play regular leather ball cricket on hard or abrasive grounds
  • You want a bat that survives a full season of heavy use
  • Your budget is under ₹6,000 and you want the most bat inside it
  • You bat a lot in nets, where volume of impact matters more than peak rebound
  • You would rather pay ₹500 now and the rest on delivery

Kashmir willow is denser and more forgiving. On rough club grounds it often outlasts an English willow bat costing twice as much — which is why so many Indian club cricketers use it as their main match bat.

Buy English willow if

  • You want maximum rebound and a softer pickup. English willow does that better, and no Kashmir bat matches it.
  • You play league or representative cricket where a fraction more response matters.
  • Your budget stretches past ₹7,999 — that is where our Surge starts.
  • You'll prepare and care for it properly. English willow is less forgiving of neglect.

Playing tennis ball cricket instead? Neither range suits. Our hard tennis bats are built for that game at ₹3,499 and need no knocking in.

Explained by the people who grade it

Kashmir willow grades, honestly explained

Grading works differently here than in English willow, and almost nobody explains the difference. Applying English willow language to Kashmir willow is where a lot of misleading marketing comes from.

In English willow, grading is largely about grain count and cosmetic cleanliness. In Kashmir willow those matter far less, because the timber is naturally denser and the grain naturally less pronounced. A Kashmir bat sold on grain count is being sold on the wrong number.

What our graders actually check: straightness of the fibre through the blade, evenness of density from toe to shoulder, absence of internal cracking or soft patches, and moisture content within the correct band. A cleft that is dense in one half and soft in the other will never press evenly — and that is what produces a bat with a dead spot.

Two things grading does not tell you

1. Grade is not build quality. Every bat here goes through the same eight hydraulic press stages, the same hand-shaping, the same Singapore cane handle and the same 12-month warranty. Only the cleft differs.

2. Names are not grades. Some sellers market top-grade Kashmir willow as "Signature Willow" or "Nurtured Willow" and price it above ₹12,000. It is the same grade we call Player Grade and sell at ₹5,999. The name on the sticker is not what makes a bat expensive — the supply chain is.

Why buy Kashmir willow from Ciel Sports

I

Eight hydraulic press stages — on every grade

Pressing compresses the surface fibres into a harder, more responsive skin. Most Kashmir willow bats are pressed once or twice, because pressing takes time and time costs money. Every bat here passes through eight separate stages with pressure raised progressively across face, edges and toe. We do not run a shorter process on the ₹4,499 Academy than on the ₹5,999 Player Edition — it is the one thing we refuse to cut.

8Press stages
II

Every cleft inspected by hand before it is pressed

Clefts arrive pre-graded, but bulk grading is coarse and it misses things. One of our bat makers checks each one individually for fibre run-out, internal cracking, soft patches and toe integrity. Clefts that fail are rejected rather than quietly moved down a grade — which is what keeps a Grade 2 bat a sound bat rather than a compromised one.

1:1Hand inspected
III

Factory direct — you pay for willow and labour, nothing else

A bat leaving a Meerut factory usually passes through a distributor, a wholesaler and a retailer before it reaches a player, each adding margin. We removed all three. That is why top-grade Kashmir willow costs ₹5,999 here and above ₹12,000 when it is rebranded as "Signature" or "Nurtured" willow and sold through a retail chain.

DirectNo middlemen
IV

Built to order, and the founders answer the phone

Nothing here is pre-made and warehoused. Your bat is shaped after you order it, to your profile, weight, balance, handle shape and toe shape, with your name engraved. Akshat and Utkarsh handle custom orders personally on WhatsApp — and they will tell you honestly when a cheaper bat in the range suits your cricket better. That happens more often than you might expect.

Questions players ask

Kashmir willow cricket bats — frequently asked questions

How much does a Kashmir willow cricket bat cost at Ciel Sports? +

Our Kashmir willow leather ball bats run from Rs 4,499 to Rs 5,999. Academy Edition Rs 4,499 in Grade 2, Legend Edition Rs 4,999 in Grade 1, Limited Edition Rs 5,499 in Grade 1+, and Player Edition Rs 5,999 in Player Grade. Every one of them includes free customisation and laser engraving, and all four can be paid with Rs 500 online and the balance cash on delivery within India.

Which Kashmir willow bat should I buy? +

Academy Edition if you bat mostly in nets or academy sessions, or this is your first leather ball season. Legend Edition for regular weekend club cricket. Limited Edition for competitive club cricket where you want the widest edges we offer in Kashmir willow. Player Edition if you want the top-grade cleft and the most consistent bat we make. All four share the same 8-stage pressing, the same Singapore cane handle, the same 12-month warranty and the same free customisation.

Is Kashmir willow good enough for leather ball cricket? +

It depends entirely on how the bat is made. A generic Kashmir willow bat pressed once or twice on a factory line will degrade quickly under leather ball impact. A hand-selected cleft pressed through 8 hydraulic stages with 40mm plus edges is a genuinely different proposition, and it is what club cricketers across India use as their main match bat. Kashmir willow is denser than English willow and far more forgiving of hard grounds, which is why it often outlasts an English willow bat costing twice as much.

What is the difference between the Kashmir willow grades? +

Grading in Kashmir willow is about fibre straightness, evenness of density from toe to shoulder, absence of internal cracking or soft patches, and correct moisture content. It is not primarily about grain count, which is how English willow is graded. Applying English willow grading language to Kashmir willow is where a lot of misleading marketing comes from. Grade 2 is denser and carries more natural character, Grade 1 is straighter and more even, Grade 1+ tighter again, and Player Grade is selected for uniform density across the entire blade.

Should I buy Kashmir willow or English willow? +

Buy Kashmir willow if you play regular leather ball cricket on hard grounds, want a bat that survives heavy use, and want the most bat available under Rs 6,000. Buy English willow if you want more rebound and a softer pickup and your budget stretches further, starting at Rs 7,999 with our Surge. English willow rebounds better and takes less effort to hit the ball to the boundary. Kashmir willow is denser and more forgiving. Both are genuine choices and we make both.

How does the Rs 500 plus Cash on Delivery payment work? +

You pay Rs 500 online to confirm the order, we build the bat to your specification and dispatch it from Meerut within 48 hours, and you pay the balance in cash when it reaches your door. The Rs 500 confirms the order so we can start the build. It applies to all four Kashmir willow bats. Orders outside India are fully prepaid at checkout, as Cash on Delivery is not available internationally.

Can I customise a Kashmir willow bat? +

Yes, and at no extra cost on any of the four. We call you within 24 hours of your order to set the player profile, the bat balance, the weight to suit your pickup, the handle shape and the toe shape, and to take the name you want laser engraved on the blade. The only paid extra is the optional preparation service at Rs 500, which covers oiling, knocking in and fibre tape.

How much knocking in does a Kashmir willow bat need? +

Four to six hours of mallet work before you use it in a match, plus one or two light coats of raw linseed oil. Because every bat is hard pressed through 8 hydraulic stages before it ships, it needs less knocking in than most Kashmir willow bats, but it still needs it. Never face a new leather ball with an unprepared bat.

What sizes do your Kashmir willow bats come in? +

Eight sizes on the Academy, Legend and Limited Editions: Size 4, Size 5, Size 6, Harrow, Short Handle, Long Blade, Long Handle and Long Blade Long Handle. The Player Edition adds Size 3, making nine. Choose by height rather than age, and if you are between two sizes take the smaller one because bat control matters more than reach.

Are these bats suitable for tennis ball cricket? +

No. These are leather ball bats. For tennis ball cricket you want our hard tennis range, which is built for balls between 125g and 150g, costs Rs 3,499, and needs no knocking in at all. Using a leather ball bat for tennis ball cricket is not dangerous but it is the wrong tool, and using a tennis bat against a leather ball will damage it quickly.

What is 8-stage hydraulic pressing? +

Pressing compresses the surface fibres of the willow into a harder, more responsive skin. Most Kashmir willow bats are pressed once or twice, because pressing takes time and time costs money. Every Ciel Sports bat passes through eight separate hydraulic stages with pressure raised progressively across the face, edges and toe. It is why our bats hold their ping through a season rather than deadening after a few months, and we do not run a shorter process for lower grades.

Do you supply Kashmir willow bats to clubs and academies in bulk? +

Yes. Our minimum wholesale order is 30 bats and we manufacture under your own brand if you want it, with your logo, stickers and colourways. Manufacturing takes 10 days. Academies are among our most frequent wholesale customers, and the Academy Edition exists partly for exactly that. Full details are on our cricket bat manufacturer and wholesale page.
