Buying direct

Buy English willow cricket bats in South Africa, from the people who make them.

Ciel Sports is a cricket bat manufacturer in Meerut, India — the city that produces roughly 70% of the world's cricket bats. Every bat we sell is graded, pressed, shaped and finished in our own workshop, then shipped directly to the player, from Johannesburg to Cape Town.

South Africa has one of the deepest cricket cultures on earth and some of the most expensive imported equipment. A premium English willow bat here can cost more than a month's wages, largely because of importer and retailer margin stacked on a bat that was made in Meerut to begin with. Buying direct removes that entirely.

Every bat is made to order: your player profile, your exact weight, your handle shape, your size and your name laser-engraved on the blade — at no extra charge.

We make a maximum of forty bats a day. Factories that turn out three thousand cannot give every bat the same attention — they choose a handful to lavish care on and the rest go out as they are. At forty, every single bat gets the same hands, the same grading and the same care. Akshat or Utkarsh answer personally when you message.

Built for your grounds

Choosing a bat for South African conditions

From the bounce of the Highveld to seaming coastal wickets, South Africa asks more of a bat than almost any country. Altitude, in particular, changes everything.

Highveld

Mid to mid-high swell

Johannesburg, Pretoria and Centurion sit at altitude, where the ball flies and bounces steeply. Contact is higher on the blade, so a mid to mid-high swell puts the sweet spot where the ball actually arrives, and rewards square-of-the-wicket play.

Coastal

Mid to mid-low swell

Durban, Cape Town and Gqeberha play lower and slower, with seam and swing doing more work. A mid to mid-low swell gives you more mass behind the ball when it stays down, and helps drive on the up.

Durability

Hard grounds, hard balls

South African outfields are firm and often abrasive, and the standard of bowling in club cricket is high. 6–9 grains is the practical range for a full season, and every bat ships knocked in with a toe guard fitted.

Tell us your level, your height, the weight you currently play with and where you score most of your runs. We will recommend the profile and pickup that suit your cricket — and we will say so honestly if a less expensive bat is the better buy for you.

The workshop

See where your bat is made

Most cricket brands cannot show you a factory, because they do not have one. This is ours in Meerut — cleft grading, 8-stage hydraulic pressing, hand shaping and finishing. Every bat that reaches South Africa starts here.

Before you order

South African buyers ask us

Can I buy English willow cricket bats in South Africa direct from the manufacturer?
Yes. Ciel Sports is a cricket bat manufacturer in Meerut, India, and ships factory-direct to South Africa. The range runs from R1,351 for the entry-level Surge to R10,135 for the Reserve Edition, plus a flat R709 tracked shipping charge per bat. Because you buy from the workshop rather than through a distributor and retailer, the same grade of English willow costs considerably less than local retail even once delivery is added.
How long does delivery take?
Your bat is built in 5 days, which includes crafting, oiling, knocking in and fitting a toe guard. Tracked transit then takes 6-7 days, so the total is 11-12 days from confirming your specification to the bat arriving. We send photographs of the finished bat and a tracking number before it ships.
Why are Meerut-made bats cheaper than the bats in local shops?
Roughly 70 percent of the world's cricket bats are made in Meerut, India, including many sold under well-known brand names. Those bats pass through a brand, an exporter, an importer and a retailer, each adding margin before reaching the shelf. Buying direct from the workshop removes those layers. The willow, the pressing and the craftsmanship are unchanged; only the supply chain is shorter.
Are the bats customised for each player?
Yes, and there is no extra charge. Every English willow bat is built to order with your choice of player profile, exact weight, handle shape, size and your name laser engraved on the blade. We make a maximum of forty bats a day precisely so that every one can be built this way.
Do the bats arrive ready to play?
Every bat is knocked in and fitted with a protective toe guard before dispatch, and oiled during the build. That means far less preparation at your end, though we always recommend a further period of gentle mallet work and some throwdowns with an older ball before facing a hard new ball in a match.
Is there a warranty?
Yes. Every English willow bat carries a 12-month handle warranty, which applies in South Africa exactly as it does in India. If something goes wrong you message the founders directly on WhatsApp rather than dealing with a retailer or a support queue.
Does altitude really change which bat I should buy?
It genuinely does. On the Highveld the ball carries further and bounces steeper, so contact is made higher on the blade and a mid to mid-high swell suits most batters. At the coast, where the ball stays lower and seams more, a mid to mid-low swell puts more mass behind the ball. Tell us where you play and we will shape the profile accordingly at no extra cost.
How does the price compare with South African retail?
A Grade 1+ English willow bat from a major brand typically retails in South Africa for well above what we charge factory-direct, because the price includes brand licensing, export, import and retail margin. Our bats are made in the same city, from the same species of willow, by craftsmen doing the same work — you simply buy them earlier in the chain.
