Our eight batting gloves run from Rs 1,999 to Rs 3,199. Killer Edition Rs 1,999, Player Edition Rs 2,499, Helix Rs 2,499, Viper Edition Rs 2,499, Falcon Rs 2,999, and GripX, Valour and Clutch at Rs 3,199. Every pair uses the same sheep leather palm, high density foam protection, cotton towelling back and velcro wrist, and weighs 200 to 220g. What changes as you move up is the finger construction and the finish, not the quality of the materials.

Sausage gloves wrap each finger in continuous high density foam rolls with no break in the padding, so nothing reaches the finger. They give the most protection and the least hand movement. Split finger gloves put one break in the padding per finger, which lets the joint bend naturally - you give up a little coverage and gain noticeably more movement. Double split gloves have two breaks per finger for the most movement in the range. Cut finger gloves leave the fingertips open for the most direct feel of the handle. There is no best construction, only the one that matches how you bat.

Choose on how you bat rather than on price. If you open the batting or face genuine pace regularly, go sausage - Killer, Player Edition, Falcon or GripX. If you score square of the wicket through the wrists, go split finger - Helix or Valour. If you bat all round the wicket and rely on quick hands, go double split with the Viper. If you bat on feel and timing and want the most direct contact with the handle, go cut finger with the Clutch.

Two sizes: Mens and Youth. Measure from the tip of your middle finger to the wrist crease. Under 17cm and you want Youth; 17cm and above and you want Mens. Most adult club cricketers take Mens. If you are between the two, take Mens - a glove slightly loose is far more comfortable over a long innings than one that restricts the hand, and a tight glove is the main reason players stop wearing gloves properly in the nets.

Order the hand you bat with. Your top hand, the one closer to the blade, takes far more direct blows than your bottom hand because it is exposed when the ball rears off a length. So the top hand glove in every pair carries heavier protection on the thumb and outside fingers. For a right-handed batter the top hand is the left; for a left-handed batter it is the right. The two pairs are mirror images, and ordering the wrong one puts the reinforced glove on the hand that needs it least.

Every pair uses the same materials. The palm is sheep leather, which gives grip on the handle and holds up through a full season. Protection is high density foam with HDF rolls on the fingers. The back of the hand is cotton towelling, which keeps the glove breathable in Indian heat. The wrist closes with a velcro strap. The pair weighs 200 to 220g.

They are built for leather ball cricket, and that is what we recommend them for. The padding density and the palm are specified for a 156g leather ball. You can use them for tennis ball cricket, but you would be paying for protection you do not need.

Ours weigh 200 to 220g per pair. Weight matters more in gloves than most players think, because you carry it through every shot and every run between the wickets. A heavy glove tires the hands and that shows up in the last hour of a long innings, which is exactly when you can least afford it.

Air them after every session rather than sealing them into a kit bag, because trapped sweat breaks down the foam and causes the smell. Wipe the sheep leather palm with a damp cloth when it gets dirty - never soap or alcohol, which dry the leather out and crack it. Never machine wash them, as it destroys the padding and the stitching. Dry at room temperature away from direct sun, and store flat rather than crushed.

When you can feel ball impact through the padding on your fingers. Compressed foam no longer absorbs the blow, and at that point the glove is giving you the feeling of protection rather than actual protection. With reasonable care a pair lasts one to two seasons of regular cricket.
