Overview

Limited edition Grade 1+ English willow, built for hitters

The Apex Limited is our power-profile bat built in Grade 1+ Limited willow — 8–10 straight grains with tight, even spacing on a face that needs no explaining. It carries a minimum edge of 42mm, a 65mm spine, a minimum weight of 1220g, and a full profile with no concaving at all.

Dimensionally it is identical to our Inferno. Same edges, same spine, same fixed full profile, same five sizes, same refusal to scoop wood out of the back of the blade. The difference between the two bats is entirely the cleft — and that is the honest way to describe it, because dressing it up as anything else would be inventing a distinction that does not exist.

It is called Limited because we cannot make it to order in unlimited numbers. Only a small proportion of clefts in any shipment reach the Grade 1+ Limited standard. When those are used, the run pauses until the next delivery produces more. We do not set a number in advance, because the timber decides it.

The straight answer first

Is the Surge the right English willow bat for you?

We make nine English willow bats and a full Kashmir willow range. The Surge is not the right answer for everyone — and we'd rather tell you here than have you find out four weeks into the season.

Buy the Apex Limited if

  • You want our power profile in the best willow we put into one
  • Your role in the side is to clear the boundary, and you can swing 1220g+ comfortably
  • Tight, even grain and a flawless face matter to you beyond pure performance
  • You want a bat that isn't in unlimited supply and won't be in everyone's kit bag
  • You already know the Inferno shape suits you and want to move up in cleft quality

Grade 1+ Limited describes the cleft — grain tightness, straightness, face cleanliness. Every gram of willow stays in the blade because there is no concaving. Pressing, handle, warranty and sizing are identical to every bat we make.

Buy something else if

  • You want this shape at the best price. The Inferno at ₹23,999 is dimensionally identical in Grade 1 willow — for most players, the better buy.
  • You want to choose your own sweet spot. The Dominator at ₹36,999 is Grade 1+ with five profiles and seven sizes.
  • You play all-round stroke play rather than power hitting. A full profile with no concaving isn't built for you, at any grade.
  • You're not already comfortable with a heavy bat. 1220g minimum is real weight, and no grade of willow compensates for a bat you can't swing.

We'd rather sell you an Inferno you'll use than an Apex you'll admire. Message Akshat or Utkarsh on WhatsApp and they'll tell you which makes sense.

What ₹42,999 actually buys you

We press, shape and finish every bat in our own Meerut facility. Here's what that changes about the Surge.

I

The exceptional clefts, kept for one shape

Every shipment of English willow arriving in Meerut contains a handful of clefts that stand out before anyone measures anything — 8 to 10 grains running dead straight, spacing tight and even across the full width, a face with nothing to explain away. Those are the clefts that become Apex Limited. We could put them into a conventional concaved bat and sell more of them. We don't, because a cleft this good with wood scooped out of the back is a waste of what makes it good.

Salix albaCaerulea
II

Eight hydraulic press stages — the same process as our premium bats

Every Apex Limited passes through eight separate hydraulic press stages, pressure raised progressively across face, edges and toe. Most bats at this price see two to four, because pressing takes time and time costs money. The extra stages compress the surface fibres into a harder, more responsive skin — which is why the Apex Limited arrives closer to ready than most big-profile bats, and why the ping holds through a full season. This is the one thing we won't cut, at any price point.

8Press stages
III

Every cleft inspected by hand before it becomes a bat

Clefts arrive pre-graded, but grading happens in bulk and it misses things. Before a cleft is pressed, one of our bat makers checks it individually for grain run-out, internal cracks, soft patches and toe integrity. Clefts that fail are rejected outright rather than quietly moved down a grade. An Apex Limited is an exceptional, tight-grained cleft — the grade describes how clean it looks, never how well it was made.

IV

Factory direct — you pay for willow and labour, nothing else

A bat leaving a Meerut factory normally passes through a distributor, a wholesaler and a retailer before it reaches a player, each adding margin. We removed all three. That is the entire reason a hand-made Grade 1+ Limited English willow bat with this much willow left in the blade sits at ₹42,999 rather than at the multiple of that figure a comparable limited-run bat reaches through a retail chain. Meerut makes the large majority of the world's cricket bats — the Surge is simply one bought at the source rather than at the end of the chain.

V

One configuration, deliberately

Like the Inferno, the Apex Limited is built in one configuration. A full profile with no concaving is the bat — put a mid sweet spot on this blade and you have built a heavier Dominator, not a power bat. You still choose your size from five and your handle shape from three, and nothing is pre-made or warehoused. The blade shape is the one decision we make for you, and on a cleft this good it is the decision that protects it.

Where the Surge sits

All 9 Ciel Sports English willow cricket bats compared

Every bat below is the same willow species, through the same eight press stages, with the same 12-month handle warranty. What changes as you move up is the cleft — grain count, straightness, and how clean the face is.

Why the run is limited

How a cleft earns Limited status

"Limited edition" usually means a different sticker on the same bat. Here is what it means on ours, and why we cannot promise you one.

The selection happens before anything is made

English willow arrives in Meerut as clefts — rough rectangular blocks, already split, dried and pre-graded by the merchant. Bulk grading is done quickly and it is not wrong, but it is coarse. Every cleft we receive is then checked individually by one of our bat makers before it goes anywhere near a press.

Most clefts pass and become Surge, Torrent, Vortex, Striker, Inferno or Dominator bats depending on what the inspection finds. A small number fail outright and are rejected rather than quietly moved down a grade. And a handful stand out immediately — those become Apex Limited.

Why we cannot tell you how many there are

We do not decide the number. The timber does. Some shipments yield a reasonable handful of Limited-standard clefts; others yield almost none, and no amount of planning changes that. So we do not announce a run of 50 or 100 bats, because that number would be marketing rather than fact.

What we can tell you is what is in stock right now. Message us on WhatsApp with the size you want and Akshat or Utkarsh will tell you honestly whether we have the cleft for it — and if we don't, roughly when the next shipment is due.

And why they all become power bats

We could put these clefts into a conventionally concaved all-round bat and sell more of them more easily. We don't. A cleft this good with wood scooped out of the back of the blade is a waste of exactly what makes it good — so every Apex Limited is built as a full profile with no concaving, and every gram stays where the tree put it.

Our guide to English willow grades explains the full ladder, and how cricket bats are made in Meerut covers what happens after selection.

Get the size right

Apex Limited size guide — five adult sizes

Junior sizes aren't offered on the Apex Limited — a 1220g minimum isn't suitable for younger players. Pick by height, not by age. Between two sizes? Take the smaller one — bat control matters more than reach. Still unsure, send us your height on WhatsApp and we'll tell you exactly which to order.

Before your first match

How to knock in your Apex Limited English willow bat

The eight press stages do most of the conditioning before the bat leaves us. What's left is yours — and skipping it is the single most common reason an English willow bat fails early.

StepWhat to doTime
1 · OilTwo light coats of raw linseed oil on the face, edges and toe. Wipe off any excess. Keep oil off the splice and handle entirely.24 hrs between coats
2 · Edges and toeStart where the wood is hardest. Light mallet taps first, rounding the edges gradually so they can absorb an off-centre hit.2–3 hrs
3 · The faceWork outward from the middle, building force slowly. Never strike the splice, the shoulders or the back of the blade.3–4 hrs
4 · Old-ball throw-downs30–60 minutes with a used leather ball before facing a new one. Check the face for seam marks — deep marks mean more mallet work.1 session
5 · Ongoing careRe-oil lightly every 8–10 innings. Store upright at room temperature — never in a car boot, never against a radiator.Season-long

Questions players ask

Apex Limited English willow bat — frequently asked questions

What is a limited edition English willow cricket bat? +

For us it means a bat we can't make to order in unlimited numbers, because supply is decided by the timber rather than by us. The Apex Limited uses Grade 1+ Limited clefts — the exceptional pieces pulled out of a shipment: 8–10 straight grains, tight even spacing, and a face with nothing to explain away. Only a small proportion of any delivery reaches that standard. When those clefts are used, the run pauses until the next shipment produces more.

What's the difference between the Apex Limited and the Inferno? +

The two bats are dimensionally identical — same 42mm minimum edge, same 65mm spine, same 1220g minimum, same fixed full profile with no concaving, same five sizes. The difference is entirely the willow. The Inferno uses Grade 1 clefts with 6–7 grains at ₹23,999. The Apex Limited uses Grade 1+ Limited clefts with 8–10 grains at ₹42,999. If you want this shape, the Inferno delivers it. The Apex delivers it in the best willow we put into a power bat.

What's the difference between the Apex Limited and the Dominator? +

The Dominator is a conventionally concaved all-round bat at ₹36,999 with 7–9 grains, five sweet spot profiles, seven sizes and a 1150–1250g range. The Apex Limited is a power bat at ₹42,999 with 8–10 grains, one fixed full profile, no concaving, five sizes and a 1220g minimum. Different jobs. Choose the Dominator for all-round stroke play, the Apex if your role is to hit the ball out of the ground.

Why does the Apex Limited have no concaving? +

Concaving is wood scooped from the back of the blade so a maker can advertise tall edges while keeping the bat light enough to sell easily. The Apex Limited keeps every gram the cleft started with. That's why it carries a 1220g minimum and why there's more mass sitting directly behind the ball at contact. You can't have maximum mass and easy pickup at the same time — anyone offering both is concaving the bat.

Can I choose the sweet spot profile on the Apex Limited? +

No. Like the Inferno, it's built in one configuration only — a full profile with no concaving — because that geometry is the purpose of the bat. You still choose your size from five and your handle shape from round, oval or semi-oval. If you want to choose a sweet spot position from our five player profiles, the Dominator at ₹36,999 uses Grade 1+ willow and is fully customisable.

Is the Apex Limited worth the extra over the Inferno? +

Only if the willow matters to you more than the shape — because the shape is the same. The honest position is that both bats will hit the ball a long way, and the Inferno at ₹23,999 is the better value purchase for most players. The Apex Limited exists for cricketers who want the exceptional clefts in a power profile and understand they're paying for grain quality and scarcity rather than for a different bat.

What sizes does the Apex Limited come in? +

Five sizes: Harrow, Short Handle (SH), Long Blade (LB), Long Handle (LH) and Long Blade Long Handle (LBLH). Junior sizes aren't offered, because a 1220g minimum is unsuitable for younger players. Choose by height rather than age, and if you're between two sizes take the smaller one.

How long does the Apex Limited take to knock in? +

Around 8–10 hours of mallet work across three to four weeks — a little longer than our concaved bats because there's more willow in the blade and the edges are thicker, and tight-grained timber rewards patience. Follow with old-ball throw-downs before you face a new leather ball. Oil first: two light coats of raw linseed, 24 hours apart, none on the splice or handle.

How many Apex Limited bats do you make? +

We don't set a number in advance, because we can't. The run is determined by how many clefts in a given shipment reach the Grade 1+ Limited standard, and that varies from delivery to delivery. If the bat is showing as available, we have clefts. Message us on WhatsApp at +91 95481 82993 with the size you want and we'll tell you honestly what's in stock and when the next shipment is due.

What does the 12-month handle warranty cover? +

It covers handle failure under normal leather ball cricket use for 12 months from delivery. It does not cover blade damage from mis-hits, damage from wet or waterlogged balls, use in tennis ball cricket, or damage traceable to an incomplete knocking-in process. If something goes wrong, message us on WhatsApp with photos and we'll assess it directly — no retailer in between.

Do you ship the Apex Limited outside India? +

Yes — we ship to 50+ countries including the UK, Australia, USA, UAE, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa. Shipping within India is free. International rates are calculated at checkout and typical delivery is 8–14 days. For international or team orders, message us on WhatsApp and we'll handle it personally.
